O’Doul’s Review

An AFSips look at O’Doul’s and O’Doul’s Amber, why the brand still matters in non-alcoholic beer, and which version is more worth buying now.

How AFSips approaches reviews AFSips writes these reviews from the brand’s current lineup, published product details, and the question that matters once the can is open: is there still a reason to come back to it?

O’Doul’s is one of the names that made non-alcoholic beer feel like its own category in the United States long before the current wave of craft cans and imported lagers showed up. AB InBev still lists both O’Doul’s and O’Doul’s Amber in its non-alcoholic portfolio, and that two-beer split matters. The regular O’Doul’s is the easier, lighter, more neutral can. O’Doul’s Amber is the one for people who want a little toasted malt and a darker, fuller note instead of that classic near-beer plainness.

That does not mean either one is trying to chase modern craft style points. O’Doul’s still lives in an older lane. It is fridge beer for someone who wants the motion of opening a cold can without dealing with added fruit, hazy hops, or cocktail branding. If that sounds dated, sometimes dated is exactly the point.

What the two versions are like

Regular O’Doul’s is the more familiar lawn-chair version: pale, crisp, lightly malty, not especially bitter, and easy to drink fast. Amber is the better buy if you want something that tastes closer to actual beer instead of beer-flavored seltzer. The malt comes through more clearly, and the color change is not just cosmetic. You get a little more toast, a little more body, and a finish that feels less washed out.

Who it still suits

O’Doul’s makes the most sense for drinkers who grew up with mainstream American beer and want a non-alcoholic version that stays in that world. If you are looking for a pilsner snap, a citrus IPA nose, or the bread-and-clove texture of a German wheat beer, this is probably not your shelf. But if you want a no-drama can for cookouts, game days, or a cooler packed with familiar-looking beer, O’Doul’s still knows what it is doing.

Which one to buy

If you are trying the brand for the first time, Amber is the better place to start. The regular version works, but Amber gives you more to taste and more reason to remember it later. The plain O’Doul’s can still land if what you want is cold, mild, and uncomplicated. Amber is the one with a little more presence.

Bottom line

O’Doul’s is not part of the flashy end of non-alcoholic beer, and that is exactly why some people still want it. Start with O’Doul’s Amber if you want the stronger first impression. Go with the regular one if you want something lighter and easier to keep around by the dozen.
